Publishing research in international reputable academic journals is a vital aspect of academic career progression. ELT Department IAIN Syekh Nurjati Cirebon in collaboration with Indonesian Journal of Applied Linguistics held an academic writing workshop featuring Prof. Eri Kurniawan, Ph.D on 4 August 2023 online. The event was attended by lecturers of ELT Department IAIN Syekh Nurjati Cirebon, lecturers from other departments, and students of IAIN Syekh Nurjati Cirebon. The session commenced with opening remarks delivered by Dr. Saefuddin, M. Ag., the Dean of FITK, and Wakhit Hasyim, M. Hum., Secretary of LP2M.
Drawing from Prof. Kurniawan’s expertise and experience, participants learned strategies to enhance their publication productivity and increase their chances of success in the global academic arena.
The presenter delved into the topic of “How to Publish in Scopus,” covering four key sub-topics: (1) Identifying Publishable Research; (2) Selecting the Right Journal; (3) Understanding Journal Expectations; and (4) Crafting and Submitting Manuscripts.
In the first segment, the presenter explored the criteria and attributes defining research suitable for publication, highlighting elements such as novelty, relevance, and contribution to existing knowledge. Additionally, the significance of establishing a robust research methodology and maintaining academic integrity by avoiding plagiarism was emphasized.
Moving on to the second sub-topic, the presenter elucidated the steps involved in identifying an appropriate journal for disseminating research findings. Considerations encompassed the journal’s scope, target audience, impact factor, and reputation, alongside a thorough understanding of the journal’s writing and formatting guidelines.
Subsequently, the session delved into understanding the specific requirements and preferences of target journals, emphasizing familiarity with author guidelines, writing conventions, and preferred formats. Insight was provided on aligning research content with the journal’s thematic focus to enhance suitability.
In the final sub-topic, the presenter outlined the manuscript writing process and submission procedures, detailing the essential components of a manuscript, recommended writing styles, and effective presentation of research outcomes. Practical advice on crafting abstracts, compiling reference lists, and formatting manuscripts was also shared.
Throughout the workshop, participants engaged actively, exchanging insights and seeking clarification on various aspects of academic publishing. The session concluded with a reaffirmation of the importance of meticulous preparation and adherence to guidelines in navigating the publication journey successfully.
