Communication is one of many aspects in daily life. According to (Soekanto, 2013) in his theory of Social Interaction, there are two aspects which is possessed by human being, one is contact and other is communication. We all already know that every activity needs communication within, because when a miscommunication happen, the other activities cannot be running well. Beside, in communicating with others we need some rules that make the communication gives the good interaction, one of the rules is grammar. Grammar becomes a difficult one for the young learners in communicating English especially in speaking. For most foreign language learners, speaking in target language is not an easy thing to undertake because a foreign language requires more than knowing it is grammatical and semantics rules (Heriansyah, 2012). Although some people understand what the young learners are talking about in speaking English even the grammar is incorrect, there is some evidence that the usage of the correct grammar in communication is important. According to Michael Lewis (a popular writer on teaching methods), grammar is not the basis of language acquisition (Zhang, 2009). By language acquisition, I mean the process by which humans acquire the capacity to and comprehend language. However, grammar is the foundation for communication, which helps people in the understanding the meaning and intent of a message (Meenakshi, 2015). Besides, grammar learning is essential of language learning field. Grammar rules like the molds of the parts of machine, without them, workers can only stand by the iron-water. Likewise, English language learners who have been deficient in language rules guidance can neither utilize English language precisely to make an entire sentence, nor communicate in English language fluidly on exactness. On the other hand, the base of English language, especially English communication is the language knowledge of grammar. Communicative competence depends on grammatical competence. It also involves knowing the way to use grammar and vocabulary of the language to sweep up the communicative purpose, and understanding how to do this action in socially appropriate way. Communicative purposes are the goals of the learners’ studying English grammar. Clearly, grammar is necessity for young learners in English communication.
The second argument claim that teaching grammar was once discouraged and most people disapproved of teaching it (Shafiee, 2015). However, grammar is a valuable asset in language learning (Saaristo, 2015). Teaching grammar will be based on the teacher itself. As we know that every teacher has some different theoretical and method of teaching to teach their students in learning grammar. According to Gardner (2008), teaching grammar methods are changed through years. He said that there are three levels of changes which are always happen in teaching, for instance, their materials, their approaches, and their beliefs (Anani, 2017) .Besides, mastering grammar helps someone to discover language comprehensively, such as understanding, writing, and speaking. It is necessary in the process of learning and teaching language because otherwise, someone cannot utilize the language in the comprehensible way. On the other hand, understanding grammar makes writing and talking more fluent. The reason is that grammar has been conceived of as one of the most necessary concept in human communication by which people express their thought and ideas they want to share. (Shafiee, 2015). They are convinced that if they did not know and understand grammar well, they would not be able to speak and communicate appropriately.
They also argue that if learners are able to use grammatical structure on learning, it does not mean they are capable of using that knowledge in daily conversation (Jose Lopez Rama, 2012). It will be definitely wrong because grammar can be considered in terms of the function needed to support communication. The grammatical structure can espouse the interaction on communication, it also allow for the speaker to express their ideas accurately and speak more clearly (Blaxell, 2012). Teaching this rules of this system according to the function to be accomplished, enables the person to embrace diverse language decision applicable to the social circumstance. The ability to engage with enlist (that is mode, field, and tenor) is basic in a person’s capacity to pick how to communicate with another. Without this information, the individual cannot settle on decisions and therefore is forced into a certain way of speaking. When we consider grammar from a socio-social viewpoint, we indeed perceive how language goes about as a component by which individuals are judged. As Dixon states “Language declares our social group” and as such this is means by which people can be classified and categorized.
It should be evident that the argument against grammar is not important for young learners in English communication not valid. Even some people understand what the speakers are saying with incorrect grammar, it may make some miscommunication. How it could be? For instance, in addition to making communication misunderstandings, incorrect grammar also creates a poor first impression. If you are a jobseeker with grammatical errors in your curriculum vitae, a company recruiter may see you as not more intelligent than a candidate who has similar skills but was able to proofread properly. Besides, if you own business and then have grammatical errors in your own marketing materials, potential customers may see these mistakes as an indication that your company is sloppy or simply unreliable (Coolidge, 2007). How grammar can influence even if it is the little thing, so the correct grammar in English communication for young learners is very important. The communication will be running well if the aspect of the interaction has a good understanding each other. Therefore, the improvement of grammar teaching and learning in every school to the student must be improved because without the improvement itself, the good grammar in each student will not be existed. The young learners in English communication need a correct grammar very much. From the text above, grammar is important for young learners in English communication.
